In December 2019, SolarWinds announced it had acquired VividCortex with plans to add VividCortex to its IT Operations Management portfolio in Q4 2019.
Through the acquisition of VividCortex, SolarWinds is expanding its database performance monitoring solutions to offer better support to technology professionals as they continue to manage the move to hybrid IT environments with applications and databases sitting on-premises and in the cloud.
SolarWinds Database Performance Monitor, previously known as VividCortex, will complement, not replace, SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer (DPA). While both tools may overlap in some areas, like offering support for monitoring MySQL, their functionalities hold some key differences.
Database Performance Monitor (formerly VividCortex) is a SaaS monitoring solution designed to support open-source platforms like PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, and Amazon Aurora. In comparison SolarWinds DPA, while not yet available as a SaaS solution, is built to provide both monitoring and insights into query performance for several on-premises and cloud relational database management systems.
The VividCortex cloud-based platform, now SolarWinds DPM, will still monitor thousands of metrics across your systems at one-second resolution to provide full visibility into your database workload. Just like VividCortex, DPM will also provide smart analytics to help you quickly diagnose issues, so you can make code improvements to tune up your database/application interactions with high-granularity insight, powerful visualizations, and fault detection.
SolarWinds Database Performance Monitor includes the same core features as VividCortex, giving you the ability to help eliminate over-provisioning and maximize system utilization to streamline operations and drive resource optimization.

“With VividCortex, I can get buy-in from non-DBAs, and I don’t have to spend time building and running reports—the ROI on time saved is crucial. It also helps build confidence between teams. Because VividCortex retains historical performance data, I don’t have to worry about manually recording any reports. I can print or email results or share them with somebody in a meeting. They then instantly have the same confidence level.”
“Now, with VividCortex, whenever we have an issue that’s impacting the mail processing throughput, we can very quickly go and answer, ‘What was running at that time? What was the most expensive query? What was taking up all the load?’ Within an hour, we can typically figure out exactly which JIRA WAR to go to.”
“We deploy new software 20 times a day sometimes. After Black Friday, after the code freeze, we deployed 86 times in the same day. Each one of these new deploys could bring new queries. Tracking those queries without VividCortex would take 24 hours. It could be too late. We could be down for 24 hours until we come up with a solution. Real-time monitoring is the only way to keep our wheels running.”
“It is what we thought it would be and more. It has features I never know I needed like the ability to compare queries over time. It is becoming more and more integral in preventing and finding issues. VividCortex’s team has also been incredibly helpful and responsive.”
“The bottom line here at PatientPing is supporting customers by optimizing every interaction between our app and database …We’ve been able to use VividCortex to… take proactive measures to keep our database healthy!”
